What Every Parent Should Expect During the First Few Weeks

Dear Families,

There are few moments in parenting as emotional as watching your child walk into preschool for the very first time.

For some children, it’s an exciting adventure. They can’t wait to explore, make new friends, and discover all the fun waiting for them. For others, it’s a little scary — new faces, new routines, a new classroom, and perhaps the hardest part of all: saying goodbye to Mom or Dad.

If your child has cried during drop-off or held onto your hand a little tighter than usual, I want you to know something before we go any further. You’re not alone.

After more than twenty years of working with children, I can tell you that what you’re experiencing is completely normal. In fact, it often tells me something very important: it tells me your child has formed a strong, healthy attachment with you. And that’s actually a wonderful thing.

The goal isn’t to eliminate those feelings overnight. The goal is to gently help children discover that preschool can become another safe, happy place where they are loved, encouraged, and cared for. That journey looks a little different for every child — and that’s okay.

🌼 The First Few Weeks Are a Time of Growth

One thing I’ve learned over the years is that preschool isn’t just an adjustment for children. It’s an adjustment for parents too.

I’ve watched countless families experience those first few mornings. Sometimes it’s the child who cries. Sometimes it’s the parent who cries after walking back to the car. Sometimes it’s both. Those emotions simply remind us how deeply we love one another.

As teachers, we understand that. That’s why our first priority isn’t opening workbooks or teaching letters — it’s building trust. Before children are ready to learn, they need to feel safe.

🌱 What Children Are Really Learning

Many parents ask me, “What are they doing during those first few weeks?” The answer might surprise you. Yes, we’re introducing classroom routines, learning names, reading stories, singing songs, and creating art. But beneath all of those activities, something much bigger is happening. Children are learning that they can:

  • 🌈 Make new friends
  • 🧸 Ask for help
  • 😊 Trust another caring adult
  • 🎨 Express themselves creatively
  • 💪 Solve little problems on their own
  • ❤️ Feel proud of themselves

These are the foundations that every future academic skill is built upon. Confidence comes before achievement.

💛 What Parents Can Do at Home

One of the greatest gifts you can give your child during this transition is consistency. Children thrive when life feels predictable. Here are a few simple ways to help:

  • 🌞 Keep morning routines calm and consistent
  • 📚 Read together before bedtime
  • 😊 Speak positively about preschool
  • ❤️ Keep goodbyes loving but brief
  • 🎉 Celebrate every little accomplishment

Instead of asking, “Did you cry today?” try asking, “What made you smile today?” or “Who did you play with today?” Those questions help children focus on the wonderful experiences they’re beginning to have.

🌼 What Happens If My Child Cries?

This is probably the question I’m asked most often. And my answer is always the same: please don’t assume that tears mean your child isn’t happy.

Many children stop crying just a few minutes after their parents leave. I’ve watched children wipe away their tears, join circle time, laugh with new friends, and then proudly tell Mom at pickup, “I had a great day!” Children are incredibly resilient. Sometimes they simply need a little time to realize they’re safe.

❤️ Building Confidence One Small Step at a Time

One thing I hope every family remembers is this: confidence isn’t something children suddenly wake up with one morning. It’s built slowly — one successful drop-off, one new friendship, one completed puzzle, one encouraging high-five, one proud smile.

Those little victories may seem small. But together, they shape how children see themselves. That’s why we celebrate every accomplishment, no matter how big or small — because every child deserves to feel proud of themselves.

🌼 Did You Know?

Research consistently shows that children develop stronger confidence when parents and teachers work together as partners. When children see the important adults in their lives encouraging one another, they feel more secure, more confident, and more willing to explore the world around them. That’s why communication between home and preschool is one of the most valuable tools we have — together, we help children flourish.

🌈 When Should I Be Concerned?

While most children adjust within the first few weeks, every child is unique. If your child continues experiencing significant anxiety for an extended period, don’t keep those worries to yourself. Talk with your child’s teacher. Share what you’re seeing at home. Ask questions.

At Kids ‘N Colors, we believe parents and teachers make the strongest team. Sometimes a few simple adjustments can make all the difference — and we’ll always work together to help your child succeed.

🌟 Looking for a Preschool That Feels Like Home?

If you’re searching for a daycare or preschool in Palmdale or Lancaster where your child will be encouraged, supported, and genuinely cared for, we’d love to meet you. Take a tour, meet the teachers, and watch the children interact. Most importantly, choose the place where your child feels safe, loved, and excited to learn.

❤️ From My Heart

After all these years, there is one moment that still makes me smile every single time. It’s the moment when a child who once needed an extra hug walks confidently into the classroom, waves goodbye, and says, “See you later!”

Not because they love their parents any less — but because they now know they’re walking into another place where they feel safe. Watching that transformation is one of the greatest privileges of my life.

It reminds me that childhood isn’t about becoming fearless. It’s about discovering that you’re brave enough to take the next step. And sometimes, all a child needs is someone who believes in them before they believe in themselves.

Thank you for allowing us to be part of your child’s story.

With love,
Ms. Monique
